Today we're going on an exciting journey with two Blacklist admins, one Egyptian and one European as they take you behind the scenes and provide a rare insight into their world. So let's start, meet Ahmed and Miss X. The differences between the two experiences are striking, why is that? leave your thoughts in comments

WHY DID YOU BECOME A BLACKLIST ADMIN?

AHMED

I created the group HURGHADA BLACKLIST IN 2014 and my number 1 goal was to make the city clear from all the scammers and the hustlers, or from anyone trying to do wrong in the city. I was born in Hurghada, I see it as the best city in the world and I wanted to help, not only the women but also help anyone who lives there. I wanted to give them a platform to share their stories because maybe someone out there can help them somehow. If no-one could help them, then at least they warned people about the person or the place which they had the problem with.

MISS X

It seemed like a good idea at the time. I'd been taken for a mug by two guys I was in relationships with and I saw other women going through the same, so it was all about showing these guys that they made a mistake when they messed with us. Revenge is sweet. But beware, it's not all rainbows and unicorns. Far from it. I had no idea how scary it could get when I joined, I have messages that would shock anyone, I seriously cancelled my holiday in-case anyone sussed out it was me.

WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART OF YOUR JOB?

AHMED

It helps many people because it stops scammers. They don't want to appear in the group. It's a warning and most don't want to be named in my opinion. I am here to help and it's difficult sometimes, it can be stressful but I can handle it.

MISS X

I had to leave because it was so stressful and I was threatened so many times. When you put yourself out there, it attracts every weirdo and troll in Egypt and even though I had a fake account, I began to feel very unsafe. You wouldn't believe how people attack you and it got to the point where it made me quite ill. Plus you're dealing with fights on a daily basis and that gets hard to deal with. You also get big trouble with Facebook and also infighting in the admin team. Some Blacklist admins are barely human but maybe you need to be like that to cope.

HOW DO YOU THINK BLACKLISTS ARE HELPING VICTIMS?

AHMED

It helps victims to tell their stories, they are consoled by sharing their experience. Many people have thanked me for the opportunity to post in my group. they feel better from sharing and in my opinion it doesn't bring trouble to their door.

MISS X

I agree with Ahmed that is does help some people, but it can bring trouble to your door. If you tell your story on a blacklist, you have to be ready for the fallout. It can be vicious and brutal for the victims and I would advise people to think deeply before doing it. I know several people who outed their scammer and now feel too scared to return to Egypt. So my advice is be careful.

HOW DO YOU VALIDATE STORIES YOU RECEIVE?

AHMED

All posts have to be backed up with proof, like a police report, documents or screenshots. I check every story to ensure they are not making it up.

MISS X

Yes, we did get proofs as Ahmed has said but sometimes they turned out to be false, so it's a minefield no matter how careful you are. Innocent people did get hurt.

HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS WITH FACEBOOK?

AHMED

Yes, for sure, often (laughs). Once or twice they closed the group. They warn me if a post isn't acceptable and remove it. When a post is removed they also warn me that they may shut down the group.

MISS X

More than you can ever imagine, believe me it can be a total nightmare. We were closed numerous times and it actually got very scary. Think death threats and you're in the ball park. I doubt they were real, but it's unnerving.

WHAT QUALITIES DOES A BLACKLIST ADMIN NEED?

AHMED

I cannot say specifically, but I know I am able to handle the group and the situation I have put myself in. I'm the only admin in the group and I made that decision so I take full responsibility for it. If I have other admins, it's not in my hands, so it's better that I take full responsibility. I made rules and members know the rules, it's better for me this way.

MISS X

You need to be the toughest of the tough, armor plated and able to deal with more shit than you can imagine. It's no game for shrinking violets. The constant stress, trolling and negativity gets inside your head and unless you are superman or woman, you will end up being affected. Life inside a blacklist team can really change you, there are some very nasty people out there, so beware if you are tempted. I wouldn't go back for a million bucks.

Two admins, two quite different experiences. I would like to thank the admins for agreeing to this interview, many turned down my request, I think they were too scared of repercussions and maybe they have good reason. The world of the Blacklist admin is not for the faint hearted.
